About to get on the sleeper train from Kiev to Minsk. Coming to the realisation that while this kind of thing is great fun if you're a backpacker who already smells a bit and doesn't have to do anything on the other end, rocking up to a business meeting straight from the station in the clothes you slept in, having been woken up twice in the night to cross the border, maybe isn't something that responsible grownups do. On the other hand, it's cheaper, my WWF colleague has been mollified by my reduced carbon footprint (entirely undeservedly as I have at a rough count taken 25 flights this year so far, which given the nature of my job, drives a tank straight through "ironic" and out the other side) and I apparently have serious ex-Soviet sleeper train nostalgia, which proves that there is no experience so uncomfortable that time can't work its magic.

On the other hand, new episode of Welcome to Night Vale. Neat.

I love ex-Soviet sleeper trains. LOVE THEM, without the slightest shred of irony or anything. Whenever i'm bumming around Europe in growing discomfort via varying means of transport and I finally cross that magical border into the ex-ussr and get on a (relatively) dirt cheap plazcart night train, I then inevitably proceed to be awed by it's comfort and cleverness and always have a perfect night's sleep. Part of it is because trains are kind of inherently exotic and romantic to me, because i'm from a place without any long distance rail at all, but part of it because I honestly find it a pretty solid system which has somehow chugged on through everything. (Also, Ukrainian Railways has a totally effective and useful website now, including the English part, which is just shy of miraculous.)

Er, but in case you don't have some weird Soviet train fetish, my condolences ;-)

Still dreaming of the day they link up Batumi to the Turkish railway system though.

Oh my. Yes.

I was really bummed when I passed through Istanbul last summer and discovered there are no longer train links into the city :-(
